This picture is of The Great Karachi. Karachi was one of the great Indian magician—except that he was actually from Plymouth in the Southwest corner of the United Kingdom. And his name was Arthur Derbyh.

The pic shows him performing an act with his assistant (a jamoora). This act was first reported by Marco Polo. Ibn Batuta claimed to have seen it too. When John Wilkie first published this article in The Tribune, the entire west was thrown into madness. Four months later, the Tribune printed a retraction noting the story had been written for the purpose of presenting a theory in an entertaining form.

Identify legendary act which even today, remains a mystery.
