X is a work that relies heavily on symbolism. The ending of Usual Suspects,, Memento, Fight Club and Being John Malkovich are examples of this kind of works. Urban Dictionary defines X as an idea or concept that shakes one's previously held beliefs or assumptions about the nature of reality.

Operation X is an important practice in the Discordian religion. It is most often manifested as a decentralized campaign of civil disobediences, activism, art movements, especially performing arts and anything else that is believed to bring about social change, forcing the victim to question the parameters of one's reality.

In an episode of The Nostalgia Critic, Douglas Walker coined this term when reviewing Tom and Jerry : The Movie. He said:

"A cat and a mouse are driving a boat, trying to rescue the daughter of Indiana Jones from a Giant Purple People Eater, a dog on a skateboard, a performing ship captain, his hand puppet Squawk, two Mexican wresters, and a doctor riding an ice cream cart! Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the X."
