coke introduced new coke, which turned out to be a complete failure. pepsi started celebrating its "victory" all over. coke did not want to accept defeat and combined with the producers of "Max Headroom Show" for this ad. the 'P' in the ad is, obviously, pepsi.
also, jim carrey is said to have copied this character's persona for his role in the truman show and later movies.
